Salmonella abortion in sheep is characterized by mass abortions of ewes in the last month of
pregnancy, 10-15 days before lambing, as well as mass diseases of lambs during the first days after birth.
In the flock, up to 90% of sheep are aborted in the last month of pregnancy. To improve the epizootic
situation of salmonellosis in the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kazakh Scientific Research Veterinary
Institute (KazNIVI) is researching to create an inactivated vaccine against salmonella abortion in sheep
from the local epizootic strain Salmonella abortus-Ovis (A)58. To manufacture a vaccine against
salmonella abortion in sheep, bacterial mass has been accumulated, inactivated and antigenic properties in
inactivated bacterial mass. If antigenic properties associated with the formation of specific anti
salmonella antibodies are found in the bacterial mass, this subsequently serves as a guarantee of the
vaccine's immunogenicity.
The antigenicity of the inactivated bakmass was studied in experiments on white mice by
determining the titer of anti-salmonella antibodies in the blood serum of experimental mice. To establish
the antigenic activity of the vaccine, the minimum titer of the antigen in the inactivated bacmass was
determined, capable of reacting in combination with dilutions of positive serum from immunized animals.
The antigenicity of the vaccine was studied in the process of determining immunogenicity in
laboratory animals under vivarium conditions (biocontrol); determination of immunogenicity in the
process of establishing the preventive effectiveness of the vaccine with the percentage results of lambing
vaccinated sheep.
