The article examines the potential use of creolin, a veterinary medicinal product traditionally applied as an insecticide and disinfectant, for the sanitary treatment of animals infected with brucellosis and as a chemoprophylactic agent.
The results of the experiments demonstrated that subcutaneous administration of a 2% suspension of phenol-free creolin to 45 sheep infected with brucellosis, at a dose of 0.1 ml/kg given four times at 7-day intervals, resulted in the clinical recovery of all treated animals.
Oral administration of a 1% suspension of phenol-free creolin to 1000 conditionally healthy sheep, delivered once at a dose of 40–50 ml per animal, prevented brucellosis infection.
Serological studies conducted by the authors two months after treatment, as well as a routine state serological examination performed one year later, did not detect a single animal with a positive test result for brucellosis in any of the herds.
A single oral administration of a 1% suspension of phenol-free creolin at a dose of 350–360 ml per head to 17 conditionally healthy cattle prevented the animals from becoming infected with brucellosis. Upon re-examination two months later, all animals tested negative.
Treatment of animals in herds affected by brucellosis with creolin under production conditions, in combination with other veterinary and sanitary measures, led to a decrease in the number of disease cases in the region during 2014–2018.
This preliminary experiment did not investigate the drug’s effects on the internal organs of animals, its elimination period from the body, or the safety of products obtained from treated animals for food purposes.
However, because the experiments yielded encouraging results, we believe that such studies should be repeated on a larger scale in the future, including assessments of the drug’s effects on the organism and its food safety implications.
