LISTERIOSIS OF FARM ANIMALS AND MEASURES OF STRUGGLE

The article summarizes the findings of a bacteriological examination of pathological material collected from an aborted bovine fetus. The analysis resulted in the isolation of the causative agent of listeriosis. Based on the assessment of its biological characteristics, the isolated strain was identified as Listeria monocytogenes. The study also evaluated the pathogen’s susceptibility to different classes of antibiotics. The strain circulating on the farm demonstrated high sensitivity to fluoroquinolone and macrolide antibiotics, as well as moderate sensitivity to semi-synthetic penicillins belonging to the β-lactam group. At the same time, the Listeria isolate exhibited natural resistance to cephalosporins (ceftriaxone, cefotaxime, cefepime), aminoglycosides (gentamicin, amikacin), chloramphenicol and tetracyclines.
Based on these results, scientifically grounded recommendations for treating animals affected by listeriosis were developed. The presence of abortions, stillbirths and weak newborn calves on the farm indicates a persistent and naturally occurring focus of infection. Veterinary professionals were advised to use antibiotics to which the pathogen showed confirmed sensitivity, conduct regular bacteriological diagnostics, identify sick animals and carriers, and monitor antimicrobial resistance patterns of isolated strains. Strict adherence to veterinary and sanitary requirements for animal housing is essential. Special attention should be given to feed quality, particularly silage, which is a key factor in listeria contamination. Rodent control should be performed at least quarterly.
As a result of comprehensive organizational, sanitary, economic and veterinary measures carried out on the farm, the incidence of listeriosis in cattle has decreased, and cases of abortions and animal deaths have ceased.
